Using Sampler module to play .jpg files.

Post by hurrells »

Hello.

I am a new (newbie) Sunvox user and have searched through the forum for something to help my problem below.

I would like to demonstrate using the sampler to "play" a .jpg file as in this (NightRadio's) example here on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ColyxxBzeiE

I am running Sunbox 1.7 Apr 8, 2012 (latest).
I can play and hear all the example songs. My computer & sunvox works OK.

These are my steps:
- Start a new song. Get basic generator -> echo -> Out.
- Run it. Everything works great and I hear noise when I play the keyboard. Good so far.
- Remove generator and echo from default
- Add sampler module
- load a jpeg (I have tried many different images).
- Click run.
Results:
- No noise
- No visible feedback on the sampler box or if I edit the sampler.

So what simple mistake am I making?

Thank You
STephen

STephen,
unfortunately, not all Jpeg files can be loaded by SunVox. Some jpg-format variations are not supported.
Also be sure that you play this sample on high octaves.
I'm not sure what is "Click run" in your steps? Is it Play? In this case don't forget to add some sampler notes to your pattern(s).

Hello NIghtRadio.

Yes, you are correct. When I wrote "Click run" I did mean the small triangle "Play" button.
I can also load some images that work. I can click on the on-screen music keyboard and hear different "white noise" types of sounds.

Please point me to documentation on how to "add some sampler notes to your patterns".
I watch Tutorial video #7 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ7asEBSvig
I don't understand yet how you load notes into the top part of the application.
I have a lot to read about this software...

Thanks

I don't understand yet how you load notes into the top part of the application.
Press SPACE or the button with lock in the top right corner of the screen. This will enable the non-realtime recording mode. Then just press any keys with notes.

Thank you for the response. I watched Video Tutorial #1 again and got that figured out.
What a great program. I haven't had this much fun with a synth since my first C64. ;-)
My behringher midi keyboard works great.

Thanks Again

Good day,

I accidentally loaded a .jpg into a sampler module last night and was pleasantly surprised with the results. Today I found out that it's been a "thing" for some time now.

One thing I'm curious about is if it is possible to see the filename of the sample after it has been loaded into the module. I'm curious what image file I'm listening to!

Cheers,

A.S.

Sure :) Just load JPEG through the Load Module function - the new Sampler with the name of your JPEG file will be created automatically

Thanks so much! It turns out that I was listening to a digital drawing of an Avro Arrow. Given our relative nationalities, this might be slightly ironic.
