How to isolate center? Inverse phase cancellation doesn’t do it.

Post by JayJaysMusic »

I am using the power of amplifiers in Sunvox to isolate certain elements of imported audio, however, theres on thing that I only know how to do in Audacity and that’s isolate the center panned elements.

I don’t know how to better explain what I mean, my thoughts don’t translate into words that well.

Stereo: (LLL)(MMM)(RRR)
Mono: (LMR)(LMR)(LMR)
What I’m trying to do: (MMM)(MMM)(MMM)

I’m terrible at explaining what I mean, so I end up with a wall of text to avoid misunderstandings, forgive me.

I'm also not sure, but thinking it could be mid/side processing.

Gilzad's mid/side metamodules are used in the song 'MonoBen - Poppin Rumba'

This can be downloaded in the 2021 SunVox compo pack (look in competitions section of this forum)

Love that song!

You can isolate the Mid channel with a single amplifier. Just set the Stereo Width controller to 0

Edit for further clarification: The Stereo Width slider changes the balance of Mid and Side signals, much like how the Panning slider changes the balance of Left and Right signals

EDIT 2: On further testing, it looks like Stereo Width is NOT and Mid/Side balance like I thought :( it just adds Left and Right to the Middle

For further clarification, the mid/side I'm talking about it a unique type, I've only figured out how to do it in Audacity.

Basically, the "Side” that is associated with mid/side is a mono (L-R) track.
However, Audacity somehow creates a stereo version of “Side” and subtracts it from the original recording.

Good call a1matt, indeed the PoppinRumba track does contain both the MidSideMux and MidSideDemux... phew! I love those modules and I'm not very good at digital house keeping and I've changed machine a few times since then.

Idk how big they are but I'd like to see them included with SunVox

Hopefully SunVox will include more audio editing modules in the near future, maybe like the MidSideMux/Demux module, but with smarter features.
