Interesting tips on creating grooves

Post by El Nino »

Its a little random but, I found this interview with roger linn in which he talks about exactly how various groove settings were created, maybe someone on here will be interested. Seems like its no problem to recreate the "famous mpc groove" setting in sunvox.

Yeah, between 0F and 1D, we can get pretty much anything done that we need to. Still, a "swing" slider on the output module would be SOOOO much easier for new ppl ;)

After reading the article, a question arises. How do I get 48 ppqn, using Sunvox?

Set TPL=12 and also double the bpm -> 48 ticks per four lines.
Or double the bpm at 6 TPL and use 8 lines per quarter note.

but how is that giving me 48 pulses per quarter note? I thought the idea behind ppqn, was that a quarter note has 48 different places it can start, which allows a more non quantized feel by taking it the note off the grid.

At the settings mentioned above you'd write at an actual bpm of half the one you set. So now using the 1D command you can trigger a note (or note stop) at any of the 48 ticks within the duration of one beat or quarter note. Delaying every second 16th note by a number of ticks from 0 to 6 would give you the seven swing variations mentioned on the second page of the article (I suspect the 60% mentioned is a mistake).

Thanks for the reply. I understand now. Thanks.

I really wish there was a code that allowed us to move a note forward; it's a pain in the ass having to use the delay code 1D, when you want to move a note forward.

Thanks again.

Swing, shuffle, groove / Re: Interesting tips on creating grooves

I've created a guide describing two methods for adding swing to SunVox inspired by this interview. It contains an example project that uses 96 PPQN and 16th note lines, and has tables to help with 24, 48, and 96 PPQN.

Hello, would it be cool to put a downloadable .pdf of that information on the site so it can be viewed when offline?

looks like an awesome project.

The reason I ask is because I'd like to flip through your guide on the android tablet whilst using sunvox on the windows tablet, whilst being offline.

Glad you like our project. :) It shows how much is still tbw (to be written) in PDF form... but it is automatically regenerated whenever we add changes. Here is the link: https://media.readthedocs.org/pdf/sunvo ... -guide.pdf

Excellent, thankyou. Much appreciated. The guide is great. I hope I can make these kinds of grooves from sunvox match with the renoise and also g-stomper ways of making groove for a project i'm working on.
