Expander 1.0

Post by monoben »

Got a sausage mix? Track just not sounding alive? Signal dynamically challenged?

Well look no further than the Expander 1.0!

It's the opposite of a compressor. A compressor turns the loud parts down, the Expander 1.0 turns the loud parts up!

Some people might argue a gate is the opposite of a compressor because it turns the quiet parts down (as opposed to turns the loud parts down).. This module is basically a gate but with some makeup gain so it sounds like the loud parts are louder. It tries to keep the quiet parts the same volume but doesn't do a very good job at it. It could use some help in this department. I have no idea how to make the quiet parts stay the same volume as the input. Having said this, the Expander 1.0 is easy enough to set such that it essentially dose this. I say essentially because it isn't perfect but it gets the job done.

It's actually a little tricky to get it to work nice. You will have to play with the "Input Gain" slider and the "Expander Simple" slider to get the module to find a nice biting point that works with the input you give it.

Any help taming this module such that it doesn't reduce the quiet parts with some settings would be greatly appreciated. But it dose expand the volume in a fairly controllable way in its current form, so enjoy!
