Transform music into moving colors?

Post by nopcorp » Sat Feb 04, 2012 7:18 am

Is there such a thing, Night Radio?

I'm looking for a program that will read music and transform it into individual data streams. Then each data stream can have specific parameters to control.

For example pitch will control the user assigned color spectrum from maybe red to yellow.
And then volume will control the motion,
or maybe light and darkness can be controlled by another part of sound.

I have heard of Metasynth and have heard of similar programs that can transform an image into sound.
But I have not found a program that will turn music into images, or specifically video. For example I want a 4:12 second song to create a 4:12 second video of generated graphic moving colors.

(Also, maybe there can be a choice of entering organic video/photo footage into the program and use that to be manipulated by theh specifics of the song: pitch, volume, attacks, decay, LFOS, filters, etc.)

Is there anything? I know it sounds like Metasynth, but this is the reverse. And I would like video, not so much just one image. Because I Metasynth will create an image out of sound, and the images are pretty cool, but not exactly what I am looking for.

Can you make it Night Radio? :)

You should try make it yourself. FFT, SDL and Perl would be my top-of-the-head starting point if I were to take on such a task...

There are any number of open source audio visualisation plugins and applications you could draw ideas from.

Video effects, whole new world of pain.

Hm.. not sure.
I plan to make new version of the ANS synth, but it will work only in Gfx->Audio direction.

Isn't that basically a visualizer, like the one in iTunes or winamp? The one in winamp (MilkDrop2) is really pretty close to your description, and if one of the included presets doesn't suit your needs, well you could always make your own. If you want a recording, just use fraps (or what ever you prefer) to record the visualizer.

Personally I think AVS (Advanced Visualization... Something) is more powerful than MilkDrop. Then again I didn't touch Windows and thus Winamp from 2009 or so so may be wrong in case of newest versions.
