Questions and Wishlist

Post by Sensory Overload »

Questions first. How many instances of ANS can run at the same time? Is it CPU-intensive? Does it recognize or take advantage of multicore processor and/or DDR3 RAM?

Now for wishlist-

I thought of many uses for this program, I LOVE it!!! It is almost like a DAW in itself, specifically designed for Ambient genres...and yet so much more, with the visual aspect as well as the ability to paint and draw your music...which led me to a few ideas for future programs....

1- a built-in multi-looper, such as Ambiloop for an example, OR
2- a SMALL multitrack (no more than 4-6...you really don't need more) with the ability to render to track.
3. a separate tab, overlay, or ability to PAINT effects, in the same manner as you paint the synthesizer audio paths.
4. effects like Delay and LFO along with the current ones.

Now- for a more experimental approach, I would LOVE to see, as it would be useful for smaller screens as well as for laptop/PC...
LAYERS!!! and smaller pop-out menu windows!

This program has so many uses as-is, but what I find fascinating is the audio/visual aspect, and painting with sound, or vice versa. If approached visually like for example Paint.NET or Photoshop, your menu windows could include many more brushes, with thumbnails, just like a typical graphics program, allowing for inclusion of more brushes, and creation of your own brushes (something mentioned elsewhere).

As for layers, this would allow for ability to draw effects, on an effect layer, editing on the fly, built-in Looper, layering of sound... and in a more visual and artistic manner than a typical DAW. I have seen "sound blocks" and "waveforms" and other ideas, but nothing that truly combines the truly artistic and visual with the audible.

With Virtual ANS, I think you've stumbled onto something that could create a whole new way of looking at or listening to things! As it stands now it is ingenious! Taken further, it could be monumentous!!! Music production has been stale lately, and everyone has reinvented the wheel rather than take actual new approaches. We also don't need new VST instruments, everything has already been done. What we need is creativity. A DAW built not for the music industry, but from the perspective of an artist, an experimenter, a musician of the "minority" genres such as Ambient, Minimal, Space, Noise, and other experimental genres.

Yes, I have seen SunVox, but there are already others similar, like Buzz, Orion, etc. and GUI is geared towards the patchers or the electronics specialists, with boxes and lines. Is it a good program? YES!!! But, is it NEW? Does it offer something that is not offered elsewhere for similar pricing? (Buzz is also free for example) Virtual ANS is a GODSEND, IMO!!!

PLEASE consider taking it further!!!!! I LOVE it!

+1 for point 4 - LFO fx would be a nice addition

Or

Just integrate VirtualANS deeper into SunVox than we have allready most of the possibilities.

For me there is three things I would love to see implemented.

To have more undo's but think that is already planned.
To be able to loop the chosen area.
And for mobile devices maybe an extra window to be able to copy and paste from.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY CIRCLES

Thanks! Be sure, all these suggestions are very important for me.

And the answers to some questions:
How many instances of ANS can run at the same time? Is it CPU-intensive? Does it recognize or take advantage of multicore processor and/or DDR3 RAM?
It depends on the height of your ANS project. For example, iPad1 can play only one project of 600-700 pixels height. My Core i7 PC can play 4000 pure tones at once on single core.
Virtual ANS is optimized for multicore, but not much. Graphics, control and sound will be executed in separate threads, but the sound itself is not optimized for multiple cores now.
SunVox. Does it offer something that is not offered elsewhere for similar pricing?
As i know there is no other similar modular trackers for plenty of platforms simultaneously :) I mean Windows, Linux, OSX, iOS, Android, Maemo, Meego, Windows Mobile, PalmOS. You can begin to write your song on some very old mobile computer, and then finish it on PC. All other similar DAWs are optimized for one/two powerful platforms only.

Thank-you!!! I am enjoying experimenting with ANS, and shall likely try SunVox as well! Looking forward to future updates and/or projects!

Question: Is it possible using pixilang to automate the X-Y travel of the cursor across an image in VirtualANS?
