Running 1.9.3b on a Jornada 720 in 2018?

Post by fycfung »

Hi all,
I managed to get a hold of a Jornada 720, and I got SunVox running on it. (Thanks to concretedog for some great tips!) But when I try opening demos and sounds, they often bog down the CPU so much the Jornada starts stuttering, and I can't seem to do much except reboot (not even sure if I can do better than pulling the battery). Are there any guidelines for which modules/presets are within this device's limits, and which should just be avoided? Thanks!

Unfortunately, most of the examples are too large for older devices like this.
If you want to use Jornada for music creation, please follow these recommendations: https://warmplace.ru/soft/sunvox/manual.php#modes
Also try to find the best buffer size (SunVox Preferences -> Audio). It may vary on different devices, and not always the largest buffer leads to the least stuttering. For example, 1536 is the best value for iPAQ devices.

Hi fycfung

I’m playing with SunVox on a Jornada 728 at the moment, as I picked up one the other day. I’ve used a 720 for SunVox in the past and thought at the time I’d be better off with a 728, but they were always really expensive. Now I’ve got the 728 it seems to run SunVox exactly the same as the 720, so I guess ram was never the issue. Must just be the low cpu power. So I’m probably in the same boat as you right now.

I’m still trying to figure out what buffer rate is the best and things like that, but maybe between us we can get things working nice? I’m on my phone at the mo, but later I’ll get on my laptop and share the contents of my sunvox_config.txt file here.

At the moment I have turned off all the visualisation stuff, so all my modules have no visual movement. I’m not sure if this is helping or not, but it seemed worth a try.

My biggest problem is that when I touch the screen with the stylus and drag things I get a lot of clicky interferencey kind of noise. Do you get this?

Yes I’ve also found that the SunVox example tracks are mostly unplayable (even the ones that are only 50kb's or so) and I have to soft reset to get out of them.

Like Nightradio suggests I’m also running all my modules in the most low quality modes (where possible) and I completely avoid using reverb.

I think it could help if I could disable the graphic equaliser thing that you can drag up from the bottom of the screen, but I’m not sure if it’s possible to do this?

I’m interested to hear how you get on with yours. Weirdly I really like the way these old machines sound! I have made loops on the Jornada that don’t sound half as nice on my laptop with the same headphones...

I'm on my laptop now and below is the contents of my sunvox_congif.txt file.
I've remapped all the number keys and qwerty keys to be the 3 octaves of the keyboard. I know it's kind of odd, but I have keys 1 to T as the minor/black keys and keys Y to M as the major/white keys. Yeah it's a strange thing to do, but it works for me. So keys Y, D & Z are the 3 C's.
I have the - and + keys as the octave up and down buttons, > as the play from begining button, < as the stop button, Enter as the insert button.
This is basically the best way I have found to make use of the Jornada keyboard.
One thing I have bought that has been really useful is a Compact Flash to SD adapter. I've got a 8GB microSD in my Jornada and it works great. I bought this adapter:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-SD-SDHC- ... 2749.l2649

Okay, so this is the contents of my config file. It's kinda work in progress until I can figure out how to get the best out of the Jornada. I don't understand what all of it means though, like hdiv1_y and vdiv1_x?????
All the lines that start with 'main' are my keyboard remaps.

Also... What aygshell file are you using? There seem to be a lot of different versions and I don't know what difference it makes using different ones.

Sorry I never got back to you on this. I downloaded some dummy one from one of the 720 support sites. I didn't really get back to this much....my 720's round battery died again and I didn't really try hard to get this support back together. Thanks so much for the mappings!

Ah no worries! Yeah mine isn't getting a lot of use right now either as I have plenty of other audio distractions... I was making a nice bit of lumpy rough techno on it a few weeks ago and do still love the form factor of these devices, but yeah, lots of other distractions!
