Success recreating shepard tone?

Post by samrai katt kovboy »

HI.
Was wondering if anyone succeded in recreating a Shepard tone in Sunvox?
Tried this afternoon but without success...
If somebody succeded will you share how you did it?

Wow, interesting idea.

haven't tried yet but this is how according to wikipedia:

the first tone could be an almost inaudible C(4) (middle C) and a loud C(5) (an octave higher). The next would be a slightly louder C#(4) and a slightly quieter C#(5); the next would be a still louder D(4) and a still quieter D(5). The two frequencies would be equally loud at the middle of the octave (F#), and the eleventh tone would be a loud B(4) and an almost inaudible B(5) with the addition of an almost inaudible B(3). The twelfth tone would then be the same as the first, and the cycle could continue indefinitely. (In other words, each tone consists of ten sine waves with frequencies separated by octaves; the intensity of each is a gaussian function of its separation in semitones from a peak frequency, which in the above example would be B(4).)

Yes tried different variations of what you are describing-
Also read the Wikipedia entry- ( which has some other similar experiments listed in that entry ).
went through the videos regarding the subject- how to recreate shepard tone in Ableton live,
but without much success-
so if somebody managed to do it in Sunvox, there would be joy if it was possible to see it in action!
At least it would save my lazy ass some time-
Lazy but persistent, so sooner or later there will be Shepard tone!

thanks for the answer.

HI GIlzad.
Thanks for the effort...

It is not really working either...
This is going to induce sleepless nights...
It is going to be tougher than I thought!

And thanks for the warning about the patterns,
peeked with just one eye and now there is blindness all over that eye.

Shepard tone on the horizon and then I fell of the cliff.

The original shepard tone are two or more gliding sine waves over some octaves. The crossfading is such that the lower and upper ends fade out/in. So you would use a slow 0001 0001 effect to do the sliding. Our ears get the impression of a ever ascending single auditory event.

So far have only been using slide to note on a 64 "note" pattern, but will try a slower glide 001 / 001...

.. .. 000F 0008 | C4 .. 0001 0008 gives a semitone per row IMHO.

I used
.. .. 000F 0010 | C4 .. 0001 0001 for an octave slide during 48 rows.

However the volumes must follow a gaussion distribution - not implemented here - which is a bit of fiddling around with a calculator... see http://www.owlnet.rice.edu/~psyc351/Ima ... dTones.jpg.

No prob. If you apply the right volumes (NOT a trivial task!) AND use 6 voices instead of 3 - you are even closer. If you work on the crossfade in the pattern loop ... you have it.

Ah, I didn't know that the volume blending is essential for the original shepard tone, thus I created a simple Esher loop.
Checked your file, jcage. Great job!
